The idea is that children come to the language learning task already equipped with a special knowledge, or Universal Grammar, containing the set of possible grammatical principles that all languages adhere to. This explains how children are able to acquire language so easily. Universal grammar is the brainchild of Noam Chomsky. In contrast to taxonomic approach of traditional grammar, universal grammar adopts cognitive approach. Quine: terms in translation.
